Let’s face it, ladies love flowers! Flowers are a great way to show how you feel about someone in a more traditional, tangible way.
The History of Giving Flowers
The language of flowers extends all the way back to hundreds and hundreds of years ago. Flowers were given by Ancient Greeks, Egyptians, Chinese and Romans as a way to communicate when telling stories. Though many believed that flowers had a special meaning, the Greeks considered flowers to be of very high importance and even associated them with the gods.
Since flowers existed, they’ve been a part of everyone’s culture. Even in the mid 1700s, the significance of flowers increased when the English and French were visiting Turkey. While in Turkey, they discovered that there was an entirely new language of flowers. In this language, each flower gave a different meaning. From this discovery, the Victorian culture created their own meaning for every single flower out there that was known at the time.
Victorians lived during an era when people didn’t believe in expressing any emotion, and they found the language of flowers to be an acceptable form of emotion and expression. With great effort and detail, flowers were given as gifts without having to say a word. For example: did you know that when a flower was presented to someone in the opposite fashion (upside down), it actually had the opposite meaning?
